Family Walks in the Evening

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

my view of our family walk by sassyseltzer from FlickrLaura: Hey Matt! What are you doing to keep fit?

Matt: Me? What do I do?

Laura: Yeah, you look fit. What are you doing to stay fit?

Matt: I’m taking a lot of long walks in the evenings.

Laura: Alone or with the family?

Matt: With the family. After an hour long walk with a twenty pound baby, you really feel it. I’m doing a lot of low intensity exercise because on The Splendid Table on NPR had a show about how a lot of low intensity is better than high intensity.

It’s funny. When I just ask normal people in my life how they are keeping healthy and fit, I learn more about about living a healthy life. Long walks with the family sounds like the most wonderful way to keep fit.

Judge’s 5K Run

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

Yesterday, I walked the Judge’s 5K Run with people from my Weight Watchers class.

Our leader, Gina, had told us to meet at the northeast corner of the parking lot so we could all keep together. Here’s a photo of all of us together. Our Weight Watchers leader, Gina, is on the right. She has been at goal for years. On the left is Jim, he has lost over 100 pounds on Weight Watchers and he is looking great!

Before they started the race, they had some radio personalities talking and they interviewed Miss Utah. She was running the race with us all.

My only thought was, “Is she going to run the race wearing that crown?” For the record, she did not. When she passed me I pointed it out that she wasn’t wearing her crown and she said, “I ran my first race with the crown and that didn’t work out.” Good to know. Next time I run a race, I’ll make sure to leave the tiara at home.

I used RunKeeper to track the run, so you can see the map of the race here.

Of course, I wanted to use the miles for the run to compete in my weekly Nike+ Challenges, so I ALSO tracked the walk with my Nike+. I love how RunKeeper maps my walks, but I also love how I can kick some serious butt in the weekly challenges with Nike+. For now, I’m measuring my runs TWICE and carrying both my iPod and my cell phone. Until Nike allows cool features like the RunKeeper site, I won’t be able to use just the Nike+. Until RunKeeper adds the fun connectivity of racing against other RunKeeper users, I won’t be able to use just the RunKeeper. I’m stuck between them both.

I had a lot of fun at this 5K walk because my friends from Weight Watchers were there with me. I can’t wait for our July 5K!

I’m Done With You!

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

I’ve talked a lot about retraining the beast within me. If you haven’t read the entries, here they are:

Sometimes it’s like I’m having a conversation with myself and it’s a war within me. Having a year of perfect days is harder than I thought it would be and easier than I thought it would be. Just when I think I’ve got it down, it gets hard again and I have no idea why. This commercial from Nike is JUST what I needed right now.

Next time you find yourself face to face with the beast within you, remember this commercial and those fateful words:

I’m done with you!

Leave your old self behind.

This applies to keeping on running when I want to stop and it applies to eating when I’m not hungry or eating food that I KNOW is going to start a binge. I’m ready to retrain that beast inside of me to do what I want, not what is easy or gratifying.

Motivation: Damien Walters

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

I dare you to watch this video without wanting to get up and do something active.

There are a few particularly cool scenes:

  • When he jumps into a moving car and gets into the driver’s seat.
  • When he does a back flip off the back of a moving car.
  • When he climbs up the light post just like the Cirque du Soleil people do in their show.
  • When he jumps onto the car going right for him, bounces off it onto the wall and bounds past it to continue running.

The description of the video is humbly listed as:

Playing around with some new moves for 2009.

My description would have been.

Super-human feats of gymnastics! Do not try at home!

Next time you’re feeling a little down and not wanting to workout out, watch this quick video and get inspired to MOVE!!

Beeble Fitness: Learn Proper Form

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

I found Beeble Fitness a while ago and completely forgot to tell you about it. It’s a great website that has tons of little videos and descriptions to tell you how to do exercises properly. Form is extremely important when you are exercising because if you do everything correctly, you are less likely to get injured. Beeble Fitness has tons of little videos to show you proper form. For example, here is a link to only ONE of their exercises, the squat.

It’s really easy to do the squat incorrectly, so Beeble Fitness has a large list of to do’s and NOT to do’s. I also love the little video showing you exactly how to do it. Next time you read about a workout and you’re unsure of how to do the exercise, head on over to Beeble Fitness and see if they have a video for that particular exercise. It helps me so much to have a clear visual example.

Why Do You Run?

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

Sometimes I wake up and I just don’t want to exercise, but watching a video like this is enough to get my butt on the treadmill or out the door.

I have to admit that when I was running outdoors in all sorts of weather, I was much more able to handle any extreme. Now that I depend on my treadmill so much, I tend to be more of a wimp during extreme weather.

Next time you are feeling like skipping your workout, take four minutes and watch this video. It will get you moving!

This Is How It Is To Run

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

I love this little animation of a yellow guy running. It really gives a good idea of the quiet and calm that I can get from an early morning run.

Running on the treadmill never felt like this, so that’s why I started filming the Starling Fitness Walking Videos. Now I get that same sense of calm and wonder on my treadmill as well.

My Weight Loss Coach

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

My Weight Loss Coach at Amazon.comI was so excited when I heard about My Weight Loss Coach for the Nintendo DS.

I pre-ordered it, so when it arrived, I was excited to finally get a chance to try it out. Unfortunately, it left me bothered and unhappy with it. The pedometer was cool and it worked seamlessly with the DS, but the software and user interface was clumsy and limited. You can see a video walk-through here:

Download this video for your iPod

It might look cute and fun to do, but there is ONE problem with this that made me stop using it. You can see the issue at the 2:21 mark. It asks you if you want to “Wrap The Day.” If you misread this as finishing putting in food for now and accidentally choose “Yes,” then you cannot add any more food that day. It’s completely closed off for you. I did that a couple of times because instinctively, it seemed like I should answer “Yes” at that screen because I was done adding my breakfast. After the second time, I went back to keeping track of my food on paper.

I liked how they kept track of energy units, which were worth approximately 50 calories. That is really close to the calculation for WW Points, so it worked well with the way I kept track of food. Unfortunately, the software was so limited that there are some foods that are just NOT on the list and no way to enter your own food unless you just enter something else with the same amount of energy units. It was an irritating experience to enter my food.

Exercise was just as irritating. I know they were trying to make it easy, but swinging the clock hand around and around to say how many minutes of exercise I did was just ludicrous. Keeping track of things should be EASIER than writing them down when I have to use my DS to keep track of food. Sure, it was cute, but I need efficient as well.

Ubisoft are the creators of my beloved Rayman Raving Rabbids and they licensed Yourself! Fitness, so I have come to expect good things from them. Unfortunately, My Weight Loss Coach didn’t live up to the Ubisoft name. Save your money and don’t bother with this one.
