Defy The Law. You Are Weightless.

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

This motivational poster from I CAN DO IT really made me happy.

Defy the law. You are weightless. From Starling Fitness

It reads:

Defy the law.

You are weightless.

Sometimes when I’m running, my legs feel like tree trunks being forced to move against their will. Other days, I feel exactly like this picture.

You never know before the workout which way you’re going to feel. Get out there and exercise because it just might be one of those days when you can defy the law and be weightless.

Sweat Is Liquid Awesome

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

I love this tank top I found on work sweat achieve.

Sweat Is Liquid Awesome from Starling Fitness

It reads:

Sweat, it’s liquid awesome

If I had made that t-shirt, I would have just said,

Sweat Is Liquid Awesome

Either way, it’s true!

I found another t-shirt on Amazon.com that looks pretty cool.

SWEAT IS FAT CRYING, Women's Bamboo Performance T-Shirt by ALO at Amazon.com

It reads:

Sweat Is Fat Crying

Next time I’m feeling gross and sweaty from a workout, I need to repeat these two phrases over and over like a mantra. It just may make my workout feel easier.

There’s No Such Thing As Bad Weather

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

This motivational poster made me chuckle to myself.

There's no such thing as bad weather from Starling Fitness

It reads:

There’s no such thing as bad weather, just soft people.

-Bill Bowerman

I found it funny that the photo for “bad weather” shows a bit of water on the ground with a few drops of rain. The bad weather in Salt Lake City right now is freezing temperatures, icy sidewalks and an inversion so thick that they have been recommending people carpool, take public transit and stay home just to limit the pollution in the air.

Now THAT is bad weather.

Yet, it’s still not an excuse. When there is a mall to walk (or run) around, there are no icy sidewalks to worry about. When there is a community fitness center, there are no freezing winds ripping into my cheeks. When there are stairs in my home, there is no inversion to clog my lungs.

Don’t believe those excuses that pop into your head. Find a way to get your workout in and you will be one of the inspirational ones. You’ll be one of the strong ones that the soft people look up to.

Running Is A Four Season Sport

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

Running again has been especially difficult here in Utah this year because it has been cold, snowy AND there is a massive inversion that makes our air pollution rival Los Angeles, but I haven’t let it stop me. I keep this thought in mind.

Running is a four season sport from Starling Fitness

Running is a four season sport. NO EXCUSES!

Once I cut out the chance for using the weather as an excuse, then getting myself to go out for a run is a lot easier.

The Distance Between Dreams and Reality

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

I absolutely love this motivational photo:

The distance between dreams and reality is discipline from Starling Fitness.

It reads:

The distance between dreams and reality is discipline.

Time and time again, we see that society rewards those who have discipline, whether it’s to put down the cake, run the extra mile or put in the overtime at work. If you want to be successful, you must be able to put aside your happiness now for rewards in the future.

The next time you’re tempted to eat poorly or skip your workout, remember this phrase: The distance between dreams and reality is discipline. You can make your dreams come true, but you have to stick to your program.

Weight Loss Is Hard And Not Particularly Rewarding

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

Shannon Chamberlain on SlateI just read this article on Slate about a woman who went from 320 pounds, down to a size 12.

Let’s say you had to starve yourself daily for bare maintenance of your health and physical appearance. Could you do it? Forever? And would you be happy? I doubt very much that you would. But still, it’s what I have to do.

THAT is the question. When I was at my lowest weight, I was STARVING. I thought about food all the time and I wasn’t particularly happy with how I looked.

I think I had blamed so much of my unhappiness on my weight that I was shocked that I was still unhappy with my appearance when I was so close to goal. The truth of the matter is, being thin doesn’t make me happy.

Neither does being fat.

Happiness and weight loss are two different things. If losing weight won’t make you happy, what are the benefits?

  • You live longer: Whether those extra years will be spent in joy or misery is your choice.
  • People respect you more: As much as we’d like to deny it, we do respect people who are thin. That girl from high school who is still physically fit is the belle of the 20 year high school reunion.

That’s about it, folks. If you think losing weight is going to change your life, you’re wrong. Losing weight will change your BODY. YOU have to change your life.

If you expect to be instantly happy because you’ve lost weight, then you’ll be disappointed. If you set concrete goals about living longer and basking in the glow of your accomplishment, then you’ll be much more likely to achieve your goal and stay there.

Bowling Is Cool!

By Laura Moncur @ 8:49 am — Filed under:

If Doctor Who says it, it MUST be true, right?

Bowling IS cool and great exercise. I have been weight training for over two months straight and I thought that by now, I wouldn’t get bowling butt every time I go, but I still do. How does bowling work that gluteus muscle in a way that squats doesn’t?

Whatever it is, I’m still going to do it every week because it’s FUN exercise!

Why Are Gym Posters So Expensive?

By Laura Moncur @ 8:00 am — Filed under:

Weight Training Stretches 24I want to put some posters up on my wall in my home gym, preferably ones that SHOW me how to do exercises, but they are SO expensive! These are the best ones I could find online, but they are all at least twenty bucks apiece!

They all look like they are good quality and they’re all laminated, but I don’t need that. All I need is a simple paper poster to go up on my wall in a frame. I want it large enough to see all the exercises and I want it to show the beginning of the move as well as the end.

Plus, TWENTY dollars apiece?! I can get a poster of anything else for only six or seven bucks! Why are these over twenty bucks apiece?

If I buy them directly from Algra, I can get them for $13 and they are paper:

I found a pretty good poster to download here: Ironmaster – Strength Multiplied It’s meant to be printed on 11″X17″ paper, so it’s pretty high resolution.

The problem with this poster is that it doesn’t show you how to DO the exercises. It only shows them in one of the states.

Chest Exercises from Starling FitnessThese images are better, but they’re so low resolution, you couldn’t print them up big enough to put on your wall.

Sparkpeople have a bunch of printable exercises, but I don’t care for the photos:

These exercises are animated GIFs, which work really well on the computer, but you can’t print them up:

It looks like I’m stuck buying those overpriced posters from Amazon if I want anything of quality. I wish there was another option.

Move In Ways You’d Never Expect

By Laura Moncur @ 8:00 am — Filed under:

I love this Reebok advertisement:

Move In Ways You'd Never Expect from Starling Fitness

It reads:

Move in ways you’d never expect.

I know it’s talking about their shoe that is supposed to be flexible, but I love this ad because it is true about exercise. When I’ve been exercising regularly and doing my after cardio stretching, I find that I am able to move in ways that I couldn’t before. I’m far more flexible than I was before I started exercising.

I’m also stronger. I can lift more grocery bags and my bowling ball doesn’t feel like such a burden anymore.

I can go the distance, too. I can walk further before I tucker out. If we are going up a hill, I can do it without stopping for a rest.

When I exercise regularly, I find myself moving in ways that I never expected and it’s a delicious surprise!

Stationary Bike Work Desk

By Laura Moncur @ 8:00 am — Filed under:

I love this kludgy hack to create a work desk for your stationary bike.

Stationary Bike Work Desk from Starling Fitness

They’ve taken a plain lap desk and positioned it for a good typing surface on the exercise bike. It’s almost ingenious in its simplicity, actually.

The next time you think that you don’t have enough time to exercise, remember this hack and how one person was able to combine two activities into one, getting BOTH jobs done!
