Dance Central: Dance Your Butt Off!
We bought a Kinect for our Xbox over a year ago, but I just wasn’t in the mood for exergaming. I had played with Wii Sports and DDR for a long time and the Kinect had such an awkward user interface that I just threw those games into the game drawer and forgot about them.
Until last week…
I reconnected the Kinect to the Xbox and dropped in Dance Central 2. It had the same awkward interface, but Sean noticed something that I had never realized before. You can control the menus with a game controller! Suddenly, that frustrating and stupid game turned out to be lots of fun!
Don’t get me wrong. Out of the box, this game is irritating. There is a horrible “Freestyle” mode that just takes pictures of you while you are supposed to dance unimpeded. I HATE it and once I found in the Options menu that I could turn off Freestyle AND Photos, I immediately disabled them.
I’m excited about Fitness Mode. I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks like it might make exercising easier because you won’t have to stop dancing to pick a song every couple of minutes.
Now that I know that I can pick songs with the game controller instead of trying to make it work by waggling my hands in the air, the song selection process takes a lot less time.
I really loved to play DDR and really worked my butt off playing it years ago. Dealing with dance pads that kept breaking after only a month or so of play, however, just killed my love for that game. With Kinect, however, there is no dance pad taking a pounding. The camera just watches me dance and gives me a score based on how well I did. For the first time in years, I’m exergaming again and I LOVE IT!
