Grilling with E. Coli
Last Sunday’s Sheldon comic caused quite a reaction in the forums. Here is a comment from one of the readers:
There is a “restaurant” in Memphis called Dyer’s (an appropriate name, you’ll see) that has been in business over 75 years. Their specialty is deep fried burgers (just the meat, to be totally clear). No, that’s not the killer part (well, yes, but it gets better/much worse). The killer part is that they deep fry the burgers in a big kettle of grease that has NEVER BEEN CHANGED in over 75 YEARS. They just top it off a bit if needed (probably not often, since the grease from the burgers adds to it). They just throw the patties in and they sink — when they’re done they rise to the top.
Here is a photo of the kettle of grease:
If the idea of 75 year old burger grease isn’t enough to keep you away from burgers for a while, then I don’t know what is…

Laura,
I found this posting oddly facinating. I have no desire to eat one of these burgers, but I was compelled to do a little research.
I found this site that talks about Dyer’s (I hope I can enter a web link in here):

On there is a video where a man (manager of Dyer’s) is interviewed on their grease.
One word: yikes.

I lived in Memphis for over five years and I am not the least bit surprised at what you say here in this article. I also went and watched the video that the commenter above posted and to be quite honest I don’t have any doubt whatsoever that the things that the gentleman says in the video are factual. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in places just like that one, the original one I mean, design of the building and all. I am surprised that the health department allows them to continue to use the same grease but I suppose it has something to do with the fact that they filter it every day. At least that’s what the guy in the video said. Although I am not a big fan of greasy food and I know most everyone that reads this blog is not either, I think I would have to try one just to see. If I do make it over Memphis way I will for sure come back here and post another comment just to let you know what one of your own thinks of that greasy burger.
