Ask Laura: I Only Lost A Pound!!

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

Hi All,

I joined WW on January 1, 2007. I lost 7lbs the first three weeks and now (my 4th week) I only lost 1lb. (weighed in today) I am so discouraged! I do a brisk 2 mile walk 5 days a week and stay within my point range. So, why the 1 lb loss?

Bridget

Bridget,

Go back to Weight Watchers right now and talk to a teacher there. Any time you feel discouraged about your weight loss, you should talk to the teachers at Weight Watchers. That’s what you’re paying for is that individual attention when you need it.

A one pound loss is amazing for the fourth week of Weight Watchers. The program is designed for a loss of 1/2 to 1 pound a week. If you lost a pound this week, you are doing everything exactly right.

One Pound of FatHave the Weight Watchers teacher show you what one pound of fat looks like. She should have a model of how big one pound of fat really is. Just think of one pound of butter. Go to the grocery store and look at one pound of butter. You lost that much in only a week. From now on, one pound a week is the most you should be losing. If you’re losing more than that, you need to up your daily points allowance.

Good luck,
Laura Moncur

Yes one pound of butter is a lot ww is designed for a loss of 1/2 to 2 pound a weeks unless they changed it again. The reason they do this is studies show that people who lose slower keep the weight off better.

I rejoined WW on 1/30. At weigh in today, I’d lost 3.6 lbs. I really tried hard this week. Bridget, I know how you feel. I’ve been through weeks when weight loss really slows down. Laura is right about talking through your discouragement. We’ve made a healthy choice. Let’s keep going.

I’ve been going to WW since September. I’ve lost 29 pounds but it’s been slow-going. Some weeks there’s even been a small gain. Also, since I have a lot to lose, it’s not easy to feel results. Now I keep a nylon bag in my pantry. Every time I lose a pound I add a 1 lb. bag of dried beans or rice to the bag. Whenever I feel discouraged, I just heft that bag a time or two…it always makes me feel better!

Tovah, that’s a good idea. You could market it to WW! They could make some clever shaped nylon bag with their logo on it. Congratulations on your weight management! I read somewhere that using the word ‘loss’ has the connotation that you want to get the weight back or gain. Which none of us obviously does. Anyway, I hope you feel proud of your efforts and what you accomplished. Do you use WW E-Tools?

Look…..I don’t know why women are so fixated on that number on the scale. It isn’t really about how much you weigh to begin with, but usually how your clothes fit and the size you are at. I have seen women that have been properly trained by a professional lose 3-4 inches off their waists and 4-5% of their total body fat. All this was done without them dropping hardly a pound on the scale, sometimes maybe even gaining a pound. The important aspects are the tape and your total body fat percentage. As most know muscle weighs more than fat. It is a common myth that if women work out with weights that they will bulk up like men do. This is not true because your bodies do not produce the necessary hormones to build muscle mass. Trust me on this. Diet fads are not the way to go. Eat sensibly. Cut your calorie intake slightly. And exercise. Cardio is important, but so is doing strength resistance training with weights. Good luck to you in the future.

I am 13 years old. I used to be overweight. Back then it didn’t bother me because I was too young to really care, but now that I’m older, I care more about the way I look. I am not nearly as overweight as I used to be, but I still want to lose more. You guys gave me some good ideas. Thanks! Do you have anymore?

So, very disappointed today. Starting WW last week and weighed in today and lost 1 pound. Almost ran out of there crying. I changed so much of my eating habits this past week and the end result, 1 pound. I don’t get it.
