Question of the Week: How do you journal?

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

Research has shown that part of being able to effectively lose weight involves journaling your food and exercise.

How do you journal your food and exercise?

Do you use a computer?

Do you use an online service?

Do you write it down on paper?

What has worked the best for you?

The Question of the Week is meant to be an Inner Workout for you. Find some time during the week and allow yourself to write the answers to the questions posted. You can write them on paper, on a word processor or here in the comments section. Whatever works for you as long as you do it.

Keep writing until you find out something about yourself that you didn’t know before. I’ve also heard that it works to keep writing until you cry, but that doesn’t really work for me. Whatever works for you. Just keep writing until it feels right.

I keep an online journal at

    http://fitnesslinks.blogspot.com/

I orginally had some of the posts on a personal blog at http://jpatrickgreer.blogspot.com but noticed quite a few of the entries were fitness focused so I decided a fitness focused blog would be best so I could better connected with other people wanted to improve their fitnes, lose weight, etc.

I find the process of writing helps draw out ideas and organize ones life you couldn’t have other wise. In fact I currently have about 8 more blogs focused on different aspects of my life. A couple currently involve me tell part of my life story and it’s amazing how much stuff I recall that I had not thought about in a long time. I advise anyone committed to fitness to also commit to being a writer as well for self discovery and accountability.

  2. Eh... not so much Says:

I’m on Weight Watchers, and I have journaling software on my Treo. I love it because I can have it with me everywhere I go.

I also write about what I’m going through weight-wise on my LiveJournal. My LJ pretty much covers everything in my life, so a significant part of it is devoted to Weight Watchers, exercise, and food. (In fact, “weightwatchers” is the most used tag in my entries. 🙂 )

I keep tract of all the food I eat everyday and track my excise. I do this at sparkpeople.com

  4. Picture It: Says:

I journal the old fashion way: pencil and paper (very portable).

My journal is based on “My Emotional Eating” instead of breakfast, lunch, dinner and 2 snacks.

The more I can “see” my reasons for emotional hunger and situations that activate my need for a food-fix, the better I am able to help myself.

Looking back through my old journals, I have found that my food addiction was hidden by the titles: Breaksfast, Lunch, Dinner, 2 Snacks and Free Foods. My exercise was journaled in every detail.

Now my exercise is a simple check mark in my journal.

To the person who mentioned Sparkpeople above thanks. I just signed up. That’s a great site!

    I use a pen/notebook in the gym.

Later I transfer that to my blog with my mental record of everything I ate. It’s not perfect, but it works for me.
