Question of the Week: Southern Cooking

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

I am currently in Austin, Texas. The restaurants here are a tribute to the Texas BBQ, so there is lots of meat to choose from, but I’m a little short on my veggie rations. Help me!

How can I eat healthy in Texas?

What are the healthiest items on the Southern Cooking menu?

Are collard greens healthy? They taste too good to be fat free. Are they cooked with lard or something to make them taste so good?

Should I be avoiding restaurants altogether and packing my own food?

If you have any experience with Southern Cooking, please leave comments here so I can make sure I’m really choosing healthy options.

collard greens are cooked with pork fat so they are not calorie free.

I’m so jealous! My whole family lives in Texas and when I visit, its BBQ all the time. Most BBQ sides are pretty evil. I’ve had collard greens made with ham hocks. Black eyed peas with bacon. Something like green beans or corn on the cob is probably safe (if they didn’t dip it in butter for you). Most traditional BBQ restaurants I’ve been too had some sort of “green salad” which was usually ice burg lettuce and maybe some carrot shavings. Low-Cal dressing is hard to find though! Dirty rice may not even be safe. Sometimes it is made with chicken livers (and butter!).

You might have more luck with seafood, assuming you can find it someplace where its not only fried. Gumbo maybe too, if its seafood, not sausage. Restaurants like Pappadeaux Seafood kitchen have grilled options. (I’ve never been to Austin, but I suspect they’re bound to have one).

There’s lots of good Mexican food in Texas, but that brings up a lot of the lard thing again 🙂

If I was there, I’d just enjoy the food and eat small bits of the sides and have like bbq chicken and take off the skin. If the sauce is on the side you can portion that out. Then when I got home I’d be working out a lot!

Find some sushi! At least its not fried! Or swing into a grocery store for a veggie tray. I’ve only lived down here since last August but have to say that healthy eating is simply not as prevalent as it was back up in my hometown in the NW.
